FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 2009:
Get BEHIND THE RED-GREEN DOOR and save energy dollars at Doylestown First Friday event at The Environmental Home Store.
The home and small business energy auditing process as the doorway to cutting energy costs will be highlighted again at the Environmental Home Store's First Friday video-discussion series on June 5 at 7 PM. Co-sponsored by the ECLA, this month's offering will feature an eclectic mix of several short videos including updated clips from Energy Star on the home audit, a George Carlin routine, and Annie Leonard's award-winning Story of Stuff.
"75% to 90% of the energy we consume is wasted because of bad design and poor choices", according to Rocky Mountain Institute. Consumers often complain that no one is available to help them get the energy and cost improvements that theorists claim. The ECLA PA and the Environmental Home Store takes you Behind the Green-Red Door of the blower test door where significant energy improvements begin.
With national energy policy and commercial practices veering between crisis and trance, according to President Obama, both consumers and contractors get whipsawed in the process. The secrets of the home energy audit will be revealed again in a variation of this very popular program from last month. As usual, local experts from the green building and remodeling community will be on hand along with an energy and climate policy specialist with Transition US.
David Secan, a certified Sustainable Building Advisor and Larry Menkes, an energy and climate specialist whose Bucks County home is a test bed for low-cost, high value energy improvements will lead the discussion and offer practical advice for cutting your home and business energy costs.
The Environmental Home Store, winner of the Best Green Resource of 2008 award, is located at 320 N. Broad St. in Doylestown. Admission is free and seating is limited; the EHS is handicap accessible. For information call 267-880-6791 or 267.992.8020.
MONDAY, JUNE 8, 2009:
350.org is an international campaign with a mission to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis--to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
Our focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. We are already above the safe zone at our current 387ppm, and unless we are able to rapidly return to 350 ppm this century, we risk reaching tipping points and irreversible climate impacts. But 350 is more than a number, it's a symbol of the direction that we need to take, and a reminder that our individual and collective actions affect the health of our planet.
In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal, we're harnessing grassroots momentum to coordinate a planetary day of action on October 24, 2009. We hope to have actions at hundreds of iconic places around the world – including Philadelphia
On June 8th at the Center for Architecture we will be an introducing 350.org to Philadelphia. There will be a video presentation by 350.org founder Bill McKibben followed by a discussion of the Philadelphia event planned for the International Day of Climate Action on October 24, 2009.

DOYLESTOWN FIRST FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6!:
The Environmental Home Store will host Monte Award winning video, "We Are All Smith Islanders" for Doylestown's February's First Friday, Feb. 6 at 7 PM. A discussion on sustainable living and home energy saving strategies will follow.
In spite of numerous news articles highlighting global climate change, not much has touched Doylestown and Bucks County. In the chill of winter we might be tempted to think a little global warming would be welcome.
But if you think that global warming hasn't affected this region, think again. Less than 200 miles south of here, the residents of Smith Island Maryland are preparing to abandon the last of Maryland's thirteen inhabited islands in Chesapeake Bay. Sea level rise in the last century has already claimed ancestral homes on the other islands and appears to be on its way up Delaware Bay.
This award-winning cautionary tale clearly shows the effects of global warming and sea level rise on the islands, shores, and inhabitants of the Chesapeake Bay region. With recent climate data from the Arctic Circle and Antarctica, we may be very close to sharing the fate of Smith Islanders, or becoming host to a growing wave of American environmental refugees.
Well produced and impeccably documented, this short, and bittersweet video will change your perception of climate change and put a human face on news we'd rather not hear.
This monthly series is produced and co-sponsored by the ECLA PA, the Post Carbon Institute Chapter in SE PA.
The Award-Winning Environmental Home Store (Philadelphia Magazine's Best Green Resource, 2008) is located at 320 North Broad St. in Doylestown, less than a half mile south of the Broad St. exit of the Rt. 611 Doylestown bypass, and a modest walk from the center of town. January 2, 2009:
A new Doylestown First Friday environmental and sustainable living video-discussion series is coming to the award-winning Environmental Home Store, 320 North Broad Street in Doylestown at 7 PM on January 2nd. The feature video for January will be "The Next Industrial Revolution: The Birth of the Sustainable Economy " featuring international design pioneers: the visionary William McDonough (Cradle to Cradle) and Michael Braungart, and is narrated by Susan Sarandon.
Those who are seeking a fundamental solution to our unsustainable way of life will find the answer in this original documentary. McDonough's landmark Cradle to Cradle approach takes Janine Benyus' concept of Biomimicry (Innovation Inspired by Nature) to its practical epitome.
McDonough's approach is uncompromising in describing an ancient model for sustainable living in nature, as a part of natural systems, without playing God as envisioned by mere humans. "There are very few visionaries who are practical - Bill McDonough is one of the most profound environmental thinkers in the world", said William Clay Ford Jr., the Buddhist Executive Chairman of the Ford Motor Company.
McDonough brings us a very challenging prescription, and likely, the only one that will work if we hope to leave a reasonably habitable world to our children.
The series is created and co-sponsored by the Post Carbon Institute's ECLA PA. Post Carbon Relocalization chapters assist communities in dealing with the challenges and uncertainties posed by peak oil and global climate change. This popular series began in Hatboro last April. The program is also being shown on second Fridays in the Astronauts Auditorium in the historic Centrifuge Building in Warminster.
Admission is free. For program information call: 267.992.8020. The Doylestown Environmental Home Store can be reached at: 267-880-6791
